[smilie=111281salams.gif] sisters!
What languages do you all speak?
I speak English and a little arabic. I was forced to speak it because my mother-in-law can't speak English. All she learned was "my mother". I don't know where she got that from.
I have an uncle in Germany. He speaks the language well. His wife is German. She's very nice. LOL [smilie=243221icon_lol.gif] Sometimes when I call she'll answer and she's try to to speak English and then get stuck. No problem I gotcha back.

My mother tongue is English but I also speak French, some Arabic and I did study German for several years but have forgotten a lot of it. I'm sure I would embarrass myself a lot if I tried a conversation with Umm Maryam in German! [smilie=243221icon_lol.gif] Ummmm.... Wie geht es dir Umm Maryam?

My first language is English, though I do speak and read (but can't write for the life of me) Urdu. I also read and write Arabic, but cannot converse. I was hoping that my Egyptian husband would help me change that, but he was raised here too, so we just end up talking in English. [smilie=1827icon_redface.gif]
I took a few years of Spanish in high school, but my memory there is incredibly vague. I do recall that french fries are called "papas fritas" though! [smilie=23icon_mrgreen.gif]

Sadly, English is the only language I speak. I took Spanish for six years growing up but remember very little about it. I admire all of you who speak/read/write/understand, etc any language in addition to your native tongue.
Now, will you all tell me where some of these languages are used?

Assalamu'alaikum ya Ukht,
I speak Malay & English. I can read Quran well & understand a lil bit of Arabic... mostly listening but very difficult to constuct myself to speak.
Malay is actually our national language... being just next to Malaysia & Indonesia. But English ended up being our First Language.

(1) Trini Patois
(2) English (British, not American)
(3) Studied French and Spanish for over 10 yrs, was fluent in both, stopped using them, forgot everything, now starting over almost from scratch with them. I've retained a bit of vocab, but my grammar is [smilie=13confused.gif] . Let's just say that I either use all verbs in the infinitive or conjugate them in the present tense. [smilie=20icon_rolleyes.gif]
(4) I can read Qur'aan fluently and I can handle just about any voweled Arabic. Unvoweled Arabic is a no go area for me. I've memorized a few ahadith and their English translations, and the first page of Thalaathatul 'Usool and its equivalent in English. I know a few other odd phrases here and there, and did the first few lessons in Book 1 of the Madinah Arabic Course series. I'm basically stuck with this language, and see no indication of making progress in understanding it in the very near future, waAllaahu 'alam.
(5) I know just a couple of words and phrases in Dutch, but this is the language I would really like to learn next, inshaaAllaah.
(6) I've picked up a bit of Yoruba, but nothing to scream about.
My dh is fluent in 8 languages, so I'm hoping that whatever else I learn is something which he doesn't already know, inshaaAllaah.

I speak English and Arabic. My first language is English and I have been learning Arabic since I converted to Islam in 2000. When I got married, learning Arabic became easier because I could always turn to my husband and ask "how do you say this and how do you say that?" My husband and I use both languages while talking to each other, but teach our son mostly Arabic. I could probably understand about half of a Spanish conversation.

Ok,my mother tongue wasn't included but has been mentioned by"Sis.Humayraa".It is YORUBA,but father&mother're from different ethnic groups (Southern Nigeria,West Africa).
My mother's language however is"Hausa(Northern Nigeria)& i can understand&speak a little.I really,really,really wish I could speak better to communicate with my mother,half-siblings from her side&maternal grandmother!
ok.little history,my maternal Grandmother is originally from "Chad"&speaks Arabic fluently alongside the Hausa language.Don't know'bout my mom but she speaks Hausa&English as far as I know!I think If I knew&lived with her,I'd have learnt to speak "Arabic" from her besides Hausa!!!
I read&write Arabic fluently(wish I could speak fluently as well)
I was learning French some years back&have forgotten most now.I just pick little bits&pieces, nothing serious or complicated.
I speak&write English almost as fluently as my mother tongue [smilie=11281mashallah.gif] !

assalamu`alaikum ukhti,
My native tongue is Arabic, in school I learned only Arabic and a smattering of English from the old blind sheikh lool.
My mother was a seamstress in Gaza and she had both Muslim and Jewish clients' so from running errands and messages back and forth for her I learned just enough Hebrew to get by.
I learned English when I came here when I was 16, still learning as I go along too! Also I took Spanish when I came here to the States, too, because we had to take another language.
Sis UmmAmeenah, my husband's mother's side of the family speaks Hausa too.

oops...I gave English..well, I do speak English, but it aint my mother tongue..Tamil is..
so, I should have voted "Any Language", i.e., if you meant "Other Language" by it..
apart from my mother tongue and English, I do speak Hindi/Urdu..a little bit of Malayalam (its another South Indian language)...I understand a little of Arabic..by little, I mean VERY little..as in, who, what, where, how, name, toilet, right, left, etc..I guess enough to manage a few sentences..thats about it..
