Assalamu Aleikum Wa Rahmetullahi Wa Barakatuh

If you found money in the street, what would you do?

Assalamu Aleikum Wa Rahmetullahi Wa Barakatuh

Depends on how much. Big amounts i would bring to lost and found office.

Assalamu alaikum,

If it were inside a store or something, I'd bring it to the office so the person who lost it could claim it.

But outside, just laying in the street - finders keepers!

Peace

pick it up ....same like UmmZiba said ....

If its a kind of a public place, like a store/post office, etc, etc i would hand it over to the manager or the person responsible for this stuff

Assalamu 'alaykum

This is weird. I had to go to my college today for a graduation audit and found twenty dollars in the parking lot. DId I pick it up, yes. I am keeping it? yes and no. I visit my local animal shelter once a month ( I have a soft spot for animals) so I will use it to buy food and treats for the animals.

I would pick it up.....look around to see if anyone is "acting like" they lost some, and if they are...I will give it back to them.

If no one is around....Or they don't seem like they lost it, I will look at it as a BLESSING FROM ALLAH and call it a day.. [smilie=23icon_mrgreen.gif].

If it is a LARGE SUM OF MONEY, then I will turn it over to the police and go from there.

most ppl dont even come back to what was being lost. so I keep it if no one around is looking for it.

When I was a child, I found a wallet right outside our doorstep. (No, we didn't have driveway or anything, the house was quite close to the road.) I went and gave the wallet to my dad, he opened it and found if full of money. He went straight around to the local police station and handed it in. The person who had lost it had reported it. He was so relieved to get it back that he gave my dad a reward for handing it in, intact.

huge amount yes i wud definitely give to the local police but small amount like 5-10, i normally donate it.
in fact last month, i had a message from an unknown number saying that 10 dhs have been deposited in my number. i tried calling him but he did not pick up. i waited for a week. after that i just donated locally. after a week he finally called saying that he had by mistake dialled my number and he wants it back. i said ok but as i or my dh did not know the procedure it took us time and he thought that we are not giving the money.
nyway finally we returned it to him.

We found $10 in the pool! Then...we lost it again. The plan before we lost it was to keep it. But Allah knows best!

Assalamu'alaikum ya Ukht,

More or less the same like other sisters...

If there's an ID or anyway I can trace the owner... I definitely will give it back !!

If not, then maybe I will keep it for sometime before spending it... or I will just donate it !!

If it's BIG amount - it will hv to go to the Police (wonder what they do with it, LOL !!)

Just the other day at the Zoo, we found a wallet with some $$ in it... it belongs to a teenager (hv ID)... we sent it back to the police, Alhamdullillah.......

jazakAllah khair...

Isn't there a hadith on to the effect that if you find something then you pick it up and keep it for a year, and if after one year nobody has come forward to claim it, then you can keep it? I'll double check inshaaAllaah.

That was an honourable thingt you did,sis.Jamila.

yes, sis.Humayraa, there's an Hadith like that b.ut I can't give te reference.

I had answered differently but re-considered I might pick the money&report to the Police Station.Otherwise,I'd let it be.Some very weird things used to happen in my Home country while I was growing up.So mothers warned their children "NEVER" to pick money on the streets!!! I and my children have found money on the street etc a few times..Once we found $100.00, there was not a person in sight! ..To be honest, my kids wanted to keep it..I could hear their brain thinking out loud.. Instead, after tossing a few ideas around, my son put it in the 'sadaqa' box in the masjid.. ..

We have decided.."finders' is NOT 'keepers'.. hopefully my kids will remember that.. i hope they do..

If it is just money, then I would pick it up and keep it for 1 year during which time I would hand it over to anyone who came forward to claim it. After 1 year, if the money remained unclaimed then I'd decide what to do with it. For now I'm inclined to do something similar to sis Lalli...give it away as sadaqah.

If it's a wallet or purse which has money in it, I'd try to locate the owner, especially if there was ID in it. If I can't find the person on my own, I'd seek the assistance of the police.
