A popular antibiotic used for treating bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections and sexually transmitted diseases may boost the risk of death, a US study said Wednesday.
Azithromycin has been on the worldwide market since the 1980s, but the study in the New England Journal of Medicine is the first to document serious heart risks -- up to a 2.5-fold higher chance of cardiovascular fatalities -- in the first five days of treatment compared to another or no antibiotic.
The comparison was based on an examination of patient records in the southern US state of Tennessee from 1992 to 2006.
Researchers at Vanderbilt University compared about 348,000 prescriptions of azithromycin to millions of records from people who were not treated with any antibiotics or who received amoxicillin, a similar medication that is considered heart safe.
The analysis found there were 47 more deaths per million in those taking azithromycin compared to those on amoxicillin.
When researchers examined patients already at high risk for heart problems, the chance increased to 245 additional cardiovascular deaths per million in the azithromycin group compared to the amoxicillin takers.
While the relative number of fatalities was low, researchers said the findings offer new information about possible dangers that doctors and patients should consider.
"We believe this study adds important information on the risk profile for azithromycin," said lead author Wayne Ray, professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University.
"For patients with elevated cardiovascular risk and infections for which there are alternative antibiotics, the cardiovascular effects of azithromycin may be an important clinical consideration."
The Croatian pharmaceutical company Pliva first patented azithromycin in 1981, and later struck a worldwide deal with Pfizer to sell the antibiotic worldwide. Pfizer branded the treatment Zithromax and Zmax.
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Side effects may include skin rashes, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing and rapid, pounding or irregular heartbeats, according to the American Hospital Formulary Service.

There are many recipes out there that call for separating your eggs and when they do, there is a good chance that you are going to have leftover egg yolks or leftover egg whites as a Fortunately, both leftover egg whites and leftover egg yolks can be stored until you need them. But that still leaves you with the question of how to you use up leftover yolks when you have a few of them on hand? Egg whites are easier to use up, because they can make a great addition to a scramble or an omelet, and most people don’t want to add several extra yolks to an omelet without the whites. Fortunately, here are 5 great recipes that put extra egg yolks to good use.

One or two extra egg yolks are often included in Yellow Cake Recipes, to give the cake batter that buttery yellow tint. To make a basic yellow cake more yellow, you can even substitute one whole egg for two egg yolks to enhance the yellow color of the cake

If you have two yolks to use up, a simple Vanilla Pudding is a nice recipe to make. Yolks add a lot of richness to the pudding, giving it a silky texture. They can make a nice addition to other puddings, including chocolate and Butterscotch Pudding, as well.

Classic Creme Brulee is the ultimate custard dessert – and a wonderful way to use up three egg yolks (some recipes may call for more or less). As in the pudding, the yolks give the creme brulee a very delicate texture and make the custard seem to melt on your tongue. The finished dish will be rich, but will feel oh-so-light.

If you find yourself with four egg yolks, consider picking up a few limes and a graham cracker crust at the store to make a Key Lime Pie. This zesty, creamy pie is easy to make and very refreshing on a hot day.

When you have more than five extra egg yolks, consider making a batch of Tocino de Cielo. This delicate flan-like custard is made with lots of yolks and no dairy. The flavor and texture are incredible – and you might find yourself saving yolks just to make up a batch.

by Rufaida

Reciting the Noble Qur’an
Reciting the Qur’an disciplines the soul in many respects. It teaches man what he is required to do and stirs in him what he needs to purify his soul.
Reciting the Qur’an enlightens the heart and reminds it of every proper conduct. In this way, it aids the other duties of Islam bringing forth their fruits, such as the Prayer, alms-giving, fasting and the pilgrimage …
Reciting the Qur’an is more likely to be effective if one ponders over the meanings with humility and contemplation
The Ten Inner Prerequisites of Reciting the Qur’an

The ten inner prerequisites are:

1.Understanding the original meaning of the words in the Qur’an
2.Feeling of awe
3. Consciousness of the heart
4. Pondering over the meanings
5. Deep understanding
6. Abandoning the barriers of understanding

7. The feel that Allah is addressing you
8. To respond to the meanings of the words
9. To be aware that Allah is witnessing your recitation
10. To believe the words of the Qur’an are referring to you

Brownies & Cookies: Yup, I do it all the time. Just put them in resealable bags or storage containers with tight-fitting lids and they’ll last as long as you can resist them!
Breads, Buns, Muffins, and Rolls: Just double-bag them to prevent freezer burn and they should be fine for several months
Cupcakes & Cake: Yes, I’ve frozen cupcakes and even full cakes! You can frost cakes before or after freezing them, but if you use store-bought frosting, you’ll want to wait to frost them until after they defrost…trust me, I know!
Granola: We love homemade granola but if I’m going to make it, I only make a huge batch….and then freeze it in mason jars or zip-top bags.
Pies: I don’t usually freeze pies, but if you do, just make sure to freeze them BEFORE you bake them.
2. Baking Supplies:

.

I freeze many of my baking supplies in shoe boxes in our freezer! {Shoe boxes stack well and allow for ventilation.}

Chocolate: I store all my baking chocolates in the freezer because I think they keep for much longer this way and taste “fresher”. Plus it frees up more space in my cabinets.
Nuts: I store all our nuts in the freezer to keep their oils from going rancid. I first heard this tip from Rachel Ray and it seems to work — so it must be true!
Flour and Sugar: While it’s not necessary, I often freeze my flour and sugar — especially in the summer when our house is more humid.
3. Dairy:

.

I’ve saved a bunch of money by purchasing dairy products in bulk and freezing them. From my experience, most dairy products should keep for at least 6 months.

Butter/Margarine: No trick here, just stick the whole package in the freezer and remove when you’re ready to use.
Block Cheese: I freeze cheese ALL the time, just remember to slice and shred it before you freeze it, otherwise it will crumble.
Cream Cheese: Believe it or not, you can freeze cream cheese. It might be a bit “lumpy” after it defrosts but it still tastes the same.
Milk: I don’t have the need to freeze our milk on a regular basis, but I do it whenever we go on vacation. Just remember to pour about 1 cup of milk out before freezing.
Yogurt: Freeze yogurt for a delicious, healthy treat. I let it defrost a bit before eating so it’s really creamy.
4. Fruits:

.

Before freezing fruit, make sure it’s washed, dried, and divided up into smaller portions. This will make it easy to quickly grab what you need without defrosting the entire batch. Fruits should keep for up to a year if properly sealed.

All Fruits: You can pretty much freeze any fruit you plan to use in smoothies because it will get mashed up anyway, however, don’t plan on freezing fruit simply for eating — it will be really soggy.
Berries: I freeze all kinds of berries for pancakes and smoothies. I also keep 2-cup containers of crushed berries to use for making jam, ice-cream toppings or, for berry shortcake.
Bananas: I peel any rotten bananas and put 4 bananas in a bag or freezer container. Then whenever a recipe calls for bananas, I just grab a container to defrost {most recipes call for 3-5 bananas so I figure I’m safe with 4!}
Jams and Jellies: I usually can my jam, but my mom and mother-in-law always freeze it. Freezing jam is quicker and easier…so if you have the freezer space, here are 20 delicious freezer jam recipes to get you started!
5. Herbs & Vegetables:

.

Herbs: I freeze fresh herbs in ice-cube trays to use for soups, stews, and casseroles later in the year. Here’s a free Herb Reference Sheet that explains how you can use and preserve different herbs.
All Veggies: To save myself some time — here is a link to my Vegetable Freezing Worksheet. It’s a list of 20 different vegetables and how to freeze them … and you can print it for free!

6. Meals:

.

I’m always making double batches of our favorite foods to store in the freezer. Then on busy days, I just defrost one in the morning, and it’s usually ready by dinner time.

Soups, Stews, and Broths: I divide these up into 1 or 2 cup portions so they defrost quicker. Here are some of my favorite soup recipes.
Casseroles: I’ve frozen everything from lasagna and fajitas, to enchiladas, chicken dishes, and more! Just make sure all the ingredients are fully cooked before you freeze it. When you’re ready to eat it, just defrost and bake as normal.
Pasta Sauce: We usually never go through an entire batch of pasta sauce in one meal so I just pop the leftovers in the freezer for the next time we eat pasta.
Meat: You can freeze cooked meat, raw meat, ground meat, shredded meat, “whole” meat, etc. Just make sure it’s properly sealed to prevent freezer burn. {I once had a whole turkey in the freezer for about 18 months and it was absolutely delicious when we cooked it!}

Here is a selection of the best resources available about the Qur'an in different topics:
Read:

QuranFlash.com: very neat interface. You can turn the page one by one like a real mushaf. You can choose the Madani Mushaf, the Indo-Pak style mushaf, the Mushaf with colored tajweed rules, transliteration, etc.

Memorize:

Reciter.org: probably the best website if you want to memorize the Qur'an. You can select a reciter and configure the number of the times the verse has to be recited, the length of the pause, etc. The interface looks like the Madani mushaf, which is much better for the memorization than the regular Arabic fonts

EHafiz.com: allows you to download the audio Quran (mp3) that has been divided digitally into tracks/ayahs. So if Baqarah has 286 ayahs, the eHafiz version now has 286 tracks.

Memorize-Quran.com: It has mp3′s that are broken up into a few ayahs (usually not more than 5 lines at a time) of quran, so that you can concentrate on those ayat and memorize the one's you need go over. You can download either husary's, mishary's, or alghamidi's recitations.

Translation:

Quran.com: Propose 6 different English translations (including the best one, Sahih International) as well as 19 foreign language

Allah'sQuran.com: very complete site with word by word translation, tafseer, recitation, search…

Tanzil.info: the translation appears when you move your mouse over an ayat.

QuranExplorer.com: Â It has the translation next to the Arabic text.

Tafseer

Tafsir.com: Tafseer Ibn Kathir

AlTafsir.com: contains the most known Tafseer books. Be aware that this site contains Tafseer from the Shi'a, and other groups. (Note from Sh. Jamaal Zarabozo's class:Â the English translation of Tafseer ibn Abbass was done by a Shi'a group and you find very strange and weird interpretations. This group also did the translation of Jalalayn.)

IslamicStudies.info: Tafseer Maulana Maududi (Towards Understanding the Quran)

Audio

QuranicAudio.com: high quality recitation

IslamWay.com: contains probably the largest number of reciters (over 200)

HalalTunes.com: awesome way to listen the Qur'an by instant streaming (fastest and easiest way to listen to your favorite reciters without having to download)

Video

QuranOnline.net: verse by verse video

Search

SearchQuran.net: Â search by sura (eg. 1, 2:25-35), or an english, arabic, or phonetic term (eg. 'bismillahi alrahman').

SearchTruth.com: Â in addition to common features, you can search in different language

Arabic

Sultan.org: for those who can understand Arabic, please refer to this website for the best resources available

May Allah swt make us amongst those who will read, learn, understand, apply and convey to others the Qur'an.

Please feel free to add your favorite website
